Todos já ouvimos falar em Antioxidantes e em como eles “destroem” os radicais livres, mas a maioria das pessoas não sabem realmente o que ocorre quando os consumimos.
RADICAIS LIVRES
Primeiramente, precisamos saber o que são os temidos radicais livres. Os chamados radicais livres são moléculas que  ficam “soltas” em nosso organismo, o que acaba levando essa molécula a entrar em nossas células, causando a oxidação da mesma. Ou seja, os radicais livres lesionam ou até matam nossas células. Essas lesões podem levar ao envelhecimento precoce e até mesmo à várias doenças como cardiopatias, aterosclerose, diabetes e até mesmo o câncer.
Não existe uma maneira de não produzirmos radicais livres, já que nós o produzimos até quando respiramos ou praticamos atividades físicas, portanto o consumo dos chamados antioxidantes é a principal maneira de nos previnirmos conta a ação das moléculas de radicais livres.
ANTIOXIDANTES
Os antioxidantes atuam em diferentes formas contra os radicais livres. Primeiramente eles agem impedindo a formação das moléculas, os antioxidantes também são capazes de impedir o ataque dos radicais livres evitando a formação lesões em nossas células, eles ainda podem reparar as lesões caudadas pelos radicais removendo os danos e reconstituindo as células danificadas.
ALIMENTOS FONTES DE ANTIOXIDANTES
Dentre os principais alimentos fonte de antioxidantes estão as frutas, legumes e verduras. Os antioxidantes encontrados na dieta e suas fontes são:
B-caroteno: presente em alimentos de cor amarelo/laranja e vegetais verdes escuros, como mamão, cenoura, abóboras, mangas, pêssegos, espinafre, couve, chicória, agrião.
Vitamina C: presente principalmente em frutas cítricas como laranja, limão, abacaxi.
Vitamina E: presente em grãos e sementes oleagenosas, como gérmen de trigo, sementes de girasol, nozes, amêndoas, avelãs, e também encontrado em couve, abacate, alface, espinafre, carnes magras, laticíneos e óleos vegetais.
Flavonóides: encontrado em sucos de uva e vinhos tintos, morangos, nozes e soja.
Catequinas: presente principalmente em chás, como o chá verde ou o chá preto.
Carotenoídes e Vitamina A: Os carotenoídes são encontrados em legumes e frutas de cor laranja/vermelhas. Os carotenoídes são precedentes da vitamina A, encontrada nas mesmas fontes que os carotenoídes e também em alimentos de origem animal.
Licopeno: Presente em alimentos avermelhados, como o tomate, melancia e goiaba.
FUNÇÕES DOS ANTIOXIDANTES
Estudos indicam que a Vitamina C possui efeito protetor contra danos causados pela exposição a radiações e medicamentos, também é atribuído a vitamina C o papel de protetora contra o desenvolvimento de tumores.
A vitamina E pode impedir danos causados por radicais livre associados a doenças específicas como artrite ou catarata.
A vitamina A tem apresentado ação preventiva contra vários tipos de câncer como o de mama, estômago, bexiga e pele, e juntamente com a vitamina C pode previnir o câncer retal ou de cólon.
Os flavonídes são responsáveis por “eliminar”os radicais livres do nosso organismo e também estão associados a prevenção de doenças cerdiovasculares. O licopeno é o principal flavoníde encontrado em nossa
alimentação e é bastante associado a prevenção de vários tipos de câncer.
As catequínas podem ser benéficas para algumas doenças como o diabetes tipo 1, cardiopatias e infecções virais.
Os alimentos ricos em antioxidantes mostram que uma dieta variada é importante para a manutenção da saúde do nosso organismo. É importante lembrar que é sempre bom consultar um nutricionista para uma indicação correta  da quantidade necessária de antioxidantes para cada individuo e que os alimentos podem ser utilizados como auxiliadores na prevenção e tratamento de várias doenças e não podem ser substitutos de medicamentos e outros tratamentos indicados por um médico.
